My car’s GPS needs an update. I’m hesitant to do it. My kids are converting me to Google Maps © on my phone. That update on the GPS is $50!
My GPS is one of the old types. It didn’t come built into my car. It’s plugged in and sits on the dash. It’s taken me a lot of places through the years. I’m not sure how the “early evangelists” got along without GPS.
There’s a toll road here in Texas that saves your time and sanity by looping far around Austin. I35 in Austin is a trap. It’s a swamp pit for catching cars. So the loop is freedom! And you can drive 80 mph! You only touch the tops of the road! You channel your inner Ken Miles and try to beat your previous best lap.
My old GPS didn’t know about the loop. It hadn’t been “updated.” I headed north from Seguin one time on the loop and my GPS couldn’t figure it out. It’s little screen showed me driving across lakes. It kept saying, “Execute a legal U-turn.” “Re-calculating.” “Turn left on Farm to Market Rd..” “Recalculating.”
I got amused. Then I started laughing. It seemed like smoke was about to come out of my GPS. I started mocking, “I know something you don’t know, I know something you don’t know.”
In a sense, telling someone about Jesus Christ, His love, His sacrifice, His forgiveness and the Narrow Road, is a GPS update. Lots of folks are living today without this update. Their GPS is set to bring them to Happiness, Marriage, Success, Fulfillment or Destiny. But, without this Jesus update, their GPS doesn’t have the information it needs. They arrive at the place they thought they wanted to be only to discover that that place can’t deliver what they had hoped for. “Recalculating.”
Last month, in Minneapolis, a man was walking home in the freezing early morning when he suddenly fell in. To the River. The frozen Mississippi River. Emergency workers were called and he was happily rescued and thawed out. Apparently, he had been following the instructions of Google Maps and mistook the directions. He was supposed to cross the river on the Stone Arch Bridge, near downtown. Instead he struck out across the frozen river and took a cold bath.*
Guidance is important. Get good directions for your travels. Please get good directions for your eternal soul! Get the directions for Jesus’ House!
